Please watch this video and read on:

A few months ago (this being December 2019) we were visiting family.

The room in which we were staying in, is strangely situated in the middle of the apartment, no windows (well except one, which looks onto the kitchen but it doesn’t look outside).

I woke up in the middle of the night and was sure that I could smell something burning.  It only lasted for a short period of time but I could smell it quite clearly.

I woke my husband, Chris and asked him if there were smoke alarms in the house?  He told me that there wasn’t.

I was terrified.  My mind starting to run riot, the way that it sometimes does in the middle of the night.  I started to think that if there was a fire, how would we escape?  We were in the middle of the apartment.  We would not be awoken in time.  The interior of the house is very heavily painted and I started to think of the fumes that would be given off.  Another factor; the apartment is quite a few flights up, certainly not jumping distance.  My thoughts were all over the place, imagining all sorts.

I just could not settle for the rest of the night and the subsequent nights that we stayed.  I just could not believe that in 2019, there were still houses/apartments, etc., that did not have smoke alarms!

Do people not care about their safety?  Maybe because I have been burned, I am “super aware” but I just can’t understand it.

I did point it out to the family but they didn’t seem concerned at all; saying that it was the husband who dealt with things like that!

I actually haven’t stayed there since.  It was something that I hadn’t noticed before; there being no smoke alarms.  If I can help it, I don’t think I will be staying there again, until there are smoke alarms installed.  To me, safety comes first.

Stay strong, we’ll chat soon.
