The next story I want to tell you happened in the last few years (this being 2019).

Please watch the video and/or read on:

Chris and I were on our backpacking travels and we had rented an apartment in Malaga, Spain.

Now before this, if I was travelling abroad, I would ask the travel agent if the hotel had gas in it (of course they did) but I had to request a room where there were no gas canisters stored outside, etc.  I did this for quite a while.  I was just so scared.  Everyone was great with me and very accommodating.

Therefore, this was quite a big deal for me, to rent an apartment, in Spain, with gas (as the explosion which injured me happened whilst on holiday in Spain).

We were to meet the owner at the apartment.  We had been in contact via e-mail, so thought that there would be no problems.

Unfortunately, there was no one there to meet us when we arrived.  We called the owner who said that he would send someone round with the keys.  Eventually, a woman turned-up, who we guessed was the owner’s mother.  She didn’t speak any English and our Spanish was very basic.

She was very friendly and showed us around the apartment.  She was doing her best, trying to explain things to us.  We were kind of understanding each other and having a few giggles.  Then she came to the kitchen and the hot water boiler.  She clearly had no idea how the gas or the boiler worked.

She was turning the knobs and tried to light the boiler.  I was getting more and more anxious and left the room.  Thank goodness for Google translate…lol.  Chris quickly let the woman know what had happened to me and why I had to leave the room.  She was lovely about it and we had a laugh.

We never used the gas the whole week we were there…thank goodness there was a heatwave in Malaga and there was no need for a hot shower…lol.  One of our friends arrived to stay with us for a few days and we told her the story; she had a laugh about it too.  Unfortunately this friend liked a hot shower, even though there was a heatwave…lol.

When the owner called on our last day to collect the keys, we had told him what happened.  At least he saved on gas that week…lol.

We’ll chat soon.
