SCARED OF FIRE (PART 1)

Obviously, my fear of fire was tremendous after being in the gas explosion, which left me with severe burns.  Even watching fire on the television upset me in the early years.  I remember while I was still in the Burns Unit; motor racing was on the television, there was a crash and a driver was trapped in his burning car.  I was shouting that someone needed to get him out.  My mum was trying to calm me down, while my dad swiftly turned the television off.

Please watch this video and read on:

There was one time (maybe about two or so years after I was burned) where we were taking some family members to their caravan holiday.  It was going to be great, as we would get to spend the day together.  No one was there to connect the gas supply to the caravan, so the men started to do this.  Unfortunately, they had connected it to the kitchen water inlet.  As they tried to light the cooker, the gas that was coming out the water tap ignited.  I remember the woman screaming for her husband to get out of the caravan.  The gas did burn off but I was not there to see that.  I ran, and I ran, and I ran; trying to get as far away as I could from the burning gas.  I remember looking back and thinking; “no, I am not far enough away yet” and I kept on running until I thought I was at a “safe distance”.

Once I knew everything was ok, I returned to my family.  I remember the couple’s son laughing at me and saying:  “Michelle ran away”.  I thought; “yeah, it’s happened to me once, I’m not letting something like that happen again, if I can help it”.  He didn’t get it…I was terrified.  I remember speaking to my mum afterwards and she totally understood why I had ran.

It is ok to “feel the fear” when you are faced with what injured you but if you are struggling with these fears, there are people out there that can help you deal with your feelings.
