Hi, you are “face to face with Shell”.
ACCEPTING “THE NEW YOU” AFTER TRAUMA/DISFIGUREMENT; LEARNING TO LIVE WITH AN ALTERED BODY IMAGE
I had recently been talking to other burn survivors, who were not as far along their burn journey as I am and they were telling me that they didn’t want to “like” the new them. They didn’t want to be “new”, they wanted the “old them” back.
I can TOTALLY understand this. It takes time to accept what has happened to you (and everyone is different, there is no time limit on this).
It is OK to be hurt, angry, resentful of what has happened to you and I think you go through a type of grieving process, grieving the life that you once had.
Although you will never be the same again, you can have a full life again, one which you enjoy, one which you may even enjoy better than the one you had.
I am proof of this and I’m not saying that it was a breeze because it certainly wasn’t, however, I came out the other side, a more stronger and determined person; who tries to make the best of every day (I still have down days though and that’s OK).
